New collaboration brings non-melanoma skin cancer prevention and early detection education to professional drivers nationwide
CARMEL, IN — Project 61, the nationwide nonprofit dedicated to improving the health and life expectancy of America's professional truck drivers, is expanding its Preventive Maintenance axle, one of the organization's 5 Axles of Health™, through a new collaboration with Regeneron’s Let’s Get Real About Skin Cancer, an educational program about advanced non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) which focuses on prevention and awareness.
Preventive Maintenance encourages drivers to approach their personal health with the same mindset they use to care for their trucks: identifying small issues before they become major problems. The initiative promotes routine medical care, recommended health screenings, preventive services, and early detection to help drivers stay healthier throughout their careers.
As the first major initiative under this expanded Preventive Maintenance effort, Project 61 and Regeneron will provide educational resources to help drivers better understand the risks of NMSCs like basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) and the importance of protecting their skin from ultraviolet (UV) exposure, recognizing potential warning signs, and incorporating simple preventive habits into their everyday routines.
Professional drivers spend thousands of hours each year behind the wheel, often with repeated sun exposure through side windows. Over time, that cumulative exposure can increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer, making awareness and early detection an important part of long-term driver health.
"Preventive maintenance isn't just something drivers do for their equipment. It's something they should do for themselves," said Jeremy Reymer, founder of Project 61. "The healthiest drivers aren't simply reacting to health problems after they happen. They're taking small, consistent steps to prevent them. Expanding this axle allows us to address important health risks, like advanced non-melanoma skin cancer, that often don't receive enough attention but can have a significant impact on a driver's quality of life and longevity."
The educational campaign will provide practical, driver-focused information that encourages drivers to:
- Understand how occupational sun exposure affects skin health
- Use sunscreen and other protective measures during daily driving
- Perform regular skin self-checks for new or changing spots
- Schedule annual skin examinations as part of preventive healthcare
- Recognize the value of early detection
The resources are designed specifically for life on the road, offering realistic strategies that fit the schedules and challenges of professional drivers.
"This collaboration represents exactly what Preventive Maintenance is all about," said Reymer. "When drivers have access to practical education and understand why prevention matters, they're better equipped to protect their health."
Educational content developed through the collaboration will be available through the Project 61 mobile app and digital platform, alongside the organization's growing library of health education built around the 5 Axles of Health™ framework.
As Project 61 continues to expand its educational offerings, the organization remains committed to helping drivers build healthier habits through practical, evidence-based resources that fit the realities of life on the road.
